The Red Sox have traded pitcher Sean Newcomb to the Athletics in exchange for cash considerations.

The Middleborough native signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox in January with the intention of competing for a spot in the bullpen, but when Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito landed on the injured list during spring training, Newcomb ended up cracking the rotation.

The lefthander appeared in 12 games, making five starts, and was 0-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 41 innings. He saved the bullpen by logging 139 pitches in long relief last week, but he was designated for assignment on Saturday with the Sox in need of fresh arms. Newcomb, 31, had been a source of depth in the rotation and bullpen; he’s tied for third in innings on the Sox.

Newcomb’s final appearance for the Red Sox came in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Orioles. He pitched one inning and allowed a run in the fifth of a 6-5, 10-inning victory, then was designated before the second game.
