Owen Wilson leads “Stick,” the new Apple TV+ original sports comedy about golf, which Mark Twain once joked “is a good walk spoiled.”
Premiering on Wednesday, the 10-episode show casts Wilson as Pryce Cahill, a former PGA Tour pro nicknamed “Stick.” The fallen athlete has become more famous for an on-course meltdown than his aces and birdies. In an effort to redeem his sad-sack life and find a sense of purpose, Cahill pivots to mentoring a rising teenage star with self-control issues, Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager). Joining Wilson as he putts toward a golfing “Ted Lasso” is character actress Judy Greer as his ex-wife and comedian and podcaster Marc Maron as Cahill’s sidekick Mitts.
What else clicks this week?
1. “The Survivors,” Friday on Netflix: The insatiable appetite for crime thrillers has washed this Australian thriller to our shores. It’s set in coastal Evelyn Bay, where the aftermath of a storm 15 years prior haunts those that remain. Survivors’ guilt weighs heavily on Kieran (Charlie Vickers) and Mia (Yerin Ha) in the six-episode miniseries. Three died in the tragedy: Two men drowned, and the body of a young girl was found and assumed to have been a storm victim as well. But what if she didn’t die from catastrophic weather? Now, when the police discover a murdered young woman, present fear and past trauma merge, uncovering long-buried secrets that may reveal the killer’s identity and tear apart the close-knit community.
2. “The Belmont Stakes,” Saturday on Fox Sports: The Saratoga Racecourse in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will host the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in horse racing’s triple crown. 2025 Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty is competing for the $2million purse with the Preakness Stakes winner (and Derby runner-up) Journalism.
3. “Good Night, and Good Luck,” Saturday at 7 p.m. on CNN: The cable news network livestreams the Broadway play, a paean to legendary reporter and conscience of the nation Edward R. Murrow. George Clooney co-wrote and stars as veteran CBS reporter Murrow, in conflict with US Senator Joseph McCarthy over the blacklisting of suspected Communists. The stage production, based on the 2005 black-and-white Oscar winner, has garnered five Tony nominations, including best actor for Clooney.
4. “78th Annual Tony Awards,” Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. and streaming on Paramount+: Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo makes for a “Wicked” host for the popular awards show, which celebrates Broadway’s best live from Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall. A major highlight is the musical numbers woven between the honors. Clooney’s “Good Night, and Good Luck,” mentioned above, is a contender in five categories despite being snubbed for best play. Meanwhile, the hottest shows are all musicals, boasting 10 nominations each: “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her,” and “Maybe Happy Ending.”
