PROVIDENCE – Police in Westerly, R.I., are investigating the discovery of “possible human remains” after officers found what appeared to be a human leg bone on Wednesday, authorities said.
In a statement, Westerly Police Chief Paul J. Gingerella said officers were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. to Everett Avenue in the town’s Watch Hill neighborhood “following a report of possible human remains being discovered.”
“Upon arrival, officers located what appeared to be a human leg bone,” Gingerella said. “The remains were collected and transferred to the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office for further analysis.
“Currently, no foul play is suspected,” Gingerella added.
Investigators are now awaiting official confirmation of the identity of the remains, and the case remains under investigation, he said.
“Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” Gingerella said.
