PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Eight firefighters have been fired or were forced to resign after an internal investigation found they may have engaged in criminal activity.

In a statement on Tuesday, the city said matters related to the probe “are serious and remain under investigation,” but did not identify the firefighters or say what the investigation is about.

The matter has led to an ongoing criminal investigation in coordination with Attorney General Peter F. Neronha’s Office. Tim Rondeau, a spokesman for Neronha, declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

As a result of the investigation, four firefighters have been terminated by the city effective Tuesday, while four have “chosen to resign and/or apply for retirement in lieu of taking part in the pre-termination hearing process.”

Christopher D. Hunter, an external public relations professional hired by the city, declined to comment further.

“It is important to emphasize that the actions of these firefighters do not reflect the dedication, integrity, or professionalism of the Fire Department as a whole,” the city said in its statement on Tuesday.
