Memorial Day weekend has arrived, and with it comes a slate of new movies and TV shows hitting streaming services. From director Bong Joon Ho’s latest sci-fi flick to an action adventure starring the Bay State’s John Krasinski, here’s what to watch this long weekend.
Movies now available to stream
‘Mickey 17’
After breaking out on the international stage with his 2019 Oscar-winning hit, “Parasite,” South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho returned to the big screen earlier this year with “Mickey 17,” streaming on Max beginning Friday. Set in a bleak future, the sci-fi tale stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” worker who gets reborn in a new clone body whenever he dies on a dangerous job. The film also stars Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Available on Max
‘Fountain of Youth’
Newton native and Brown University alum John Krasinski flexes his action adventure muscles in “Fountain of Youth,” hitting Apple TV+ on Friday. Krasinski gives off big “National Treasure” vibes as his character embarks on an international heist in search of the titular waters with his sibling, played by Oscar winner and Harvard alum Natalie Portman. Available on Apple TV+
TV shows now available to stream
‘Motorheads’
Take a ride in the fast lane with “Motorheads,” a high-octane new drama that dropped all 10 of its season 1 episodes on Prime Video this week. The series centers around small town teens navigating the challenges of high school and love, with a bit of street racing action thrown into the mix. Available on Prime Video
American Music Awards
Since it’s a long weekend for many of us, keep the fun rolling on Monday and tune into this year’s American Music Awards. Hosted by Jennifer Lopez, this year’s festivities stream live on Paramount+ beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday (also airing live on CBS). Among the lineup of performers are Benson Boone, Gloria Estefan, Gwen Stefani, as well as the evening’s ICON Award recipient, Janet Jackson, and Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Rod Stewart. Streams live Monday on Paramount+
Binge-worthy weekend TV pick
‘Masters of the Air’
In honor of the Memorial Day holiday, revisit the World War II miniseries “Masters of the Air” on Apple TV+. The show chronicles the bravery of the 100th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force, with an impressive cast of pilots including Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, and Callum Turner. “Masters of the Air” is also the latest WWII epic from executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg, who were also behind the acclaimed series “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Available on Apple TV+
Movie night pick
‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Feeling the need for speed? Head over to Paramount+ and stream the blockbuster sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.” The film features Tom Cruise back in the cockpit 36 years after taking to the skies in the original “Top Gun” (also streaming on Paramount+, as well as Prime Video), with the late Val Kilmer reprising his role as Iceman in a touching cameo. Also starring Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, and Miles Teller, “Top Gun: Maverick” still holds the title for the biggest Memorial Day weekend box office from when it debuted in 2022.
