A Delta Air Lines flight bound for New Orleans returned to Boston Logan International Airport on Sunday after a “smoky odor’’ was detected in the cabin, officials said.
Flight DL1398, carrying 87 passengers, three flight attendants, and two pilots, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff to get priority handling from air traffic control.
The passenger jet made it back to the gate safely, where it was met by emergency personnel.
Three people were treated on the scene, and one was taken to the hospital.
“Delta flight 1398 returned to Boston shortly after takeoff after a smoky odor was detected in the cabin,’’ a Delta spokesperson said. “Our flight crew followed established procedures and returned to Boston safely.’’
The incident comes at a time of heightened concern over air travel after a series of high-profile mishaps.
Since the end of January, a helicopter and a passenger plane crashed in Washington D.C., killing 67, a small plane crashed in Vermont, and a flight overturned while landing in Toronto.
A Massachusetts Port Authority spokesperson said the plane landed “without incident.’’
