MLB bans fans who grabbed Betts

Major League Baseball banned the two fans who interfered with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts during Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 29 from attending any games at big league ballparks. Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen were informed by letter “their conduct posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player and went far over the line of acceptable fan behavior.’’ Each was banned “indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and other facilities.’’

Blue Jays add All-Star reliever

All-Star reliever Jeff Hoffman and the Blue Jays agreed to a $33 million, three-year contract. The team announced the deal two days after Hoffman’s 32nd birthday. The righthander went 3-3 with a 2.17 ERA and 10 saves in a career-high 68 appearances last season for the NL East champion Phillies, earning his first All-Star selection in July. He struck out 89 and walked 16 in 66⅓ innings, holding opposing hitters to a .197 batting average.

Ganago loaned to Revolution

With their preseason camp starting Monday, the Revolution completed the acquisition of Cameroonian forward/winger Ignatius Ganago on a six-month loan from FC Nantes of France’s Ligue 1. The 25-year-old has spent nine seasons in France’s top domestic league across three clubs, scoring 23 goals in 153 matches, as well as making 14 appearances for the Cameroon national team. The Revolution also announced their six-match preseason slate, which begins Jan. 21 against Austin FC.

Lakers, Clippers postponed

Saturday games between the Spurs and Lakers and the Hornets and Clippers have been postponed due to the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The NBA announcement came hours after Lakers head coach JJ Redick confirmed his family lost its home in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday . . . The Pelicans suspended power forward Zion Williamson for Friday’s game against Philadelphia for a violation of team policies.

Beck passes on NFL for Miami

Carson Beck, the former Georgia quarterback, has pushed his NFL plans back a year and committed to play next season at Miami. Beck signed a grant-in-aid agreement with the Hurricanes, a source told the Associated Press. The move means Beck — who is recovering from December elbow surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament — is presumably taking over as Miami’s starter.

Castroneves in at Daytona

Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves claimed a spot in the season-opening Daytona 500 under a new NASCAR provision that earmarks a position for “world-class drivers’’ who enter a Cup Series race. The 49-year-old was previously going to either have to earn his spot in time trials or finishing position in a qualifying race.
